Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland, is making reading more accessible for its students with a free book vending machine right inside the building.
Throughout the year, students have been able to take home books, on their birthdays, at no cost, helping to build excitement around reading and access to stories that reflect their lives.
The machine is part of an initiative led by @storybookmaze, a Baltimore street librarian working to eliminate book deserts by installing free book vending machines in schools and neighborhoods. In some low-income communities, up to 300 children might share just one book—this effort is helping to change that.
