Perfectly splendid!
A 12-year-old is making history as one of the youngest composers for the New York Philharmonic, Pix11 reports.
Grace Moore is a seventh grade student at Poly Prep in Dyker Heights, a small neighborhood in Brooklyn. Moore is a member of the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, an after school program that enrolls students as young as 8-years-old and exposes them to the orchestra, “helps to nurture their inherent creativity, develop their musical skills,” and allows students to create, notate, and submit music to be performed by Philharmonic musicians.
Moore, a music aficionado who began playing the piano at age 2, immediately took to the program. She then had the chance to create a piece of music that debuted this past October in a world premiere by the Philharmonic. Her exemplary talent displayed for all the world to see allowed her to make history as one of their youngest composers ever.
Gary Padmore, director of the Very Young Composers program, said that this is exactly why the program was created, to give young children from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to hone in on their natural abilities.
“Every child has the ability to be creative and tell their story,” Padmore said.
For Moore, who describes herself as quiet and shy, the opportunity is about more than just herself, it’s about what it means for other young Black girls and how her story can inspire them to create as well.
“I hope everyone follows their hobbies and do what they love,” Moore said.
