It’s just one of many expansions to their athletic roster!
Fisk University just launched the first HBCU Intercollegiate Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team, Fisk.edu reports.
The university has a long reputation as a leader in academic and social justice excellence, boasting a legacy of esteemed faculty members such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington and alumni that include Nikki Giovanni and late civil rights activist John Lewis. Now, the Nashville HBCU is expanding its imprint, making a renewed commitment to broaden their athletics programs.
In recent years, they’ve hired new faculty like NBA legend Kenny Anderson, who oversees the basketball program, retired Soccer star Desmond Armstrong, who serves as head coach of Fisk’s soccer program, and Coach Jessica Enderle, who has transformed the women’s volleyball program. Now, the university is announcing a new offering, launching the first HBCU Intercollegiate Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team.
“Fisk University has built remarkable momentum in recent years. The University is committed to preparing the next generation of leaders and c-suite executives. Student-Athletes depend on an institution that enables them to translate their unique skills to professional success,” said President Vann Newkirk.
In addition to the launch of the new program, Fisk also recently announced a partnership with the Los Angeles Lakers that should help offer more access and opportunities for Fisk students in the world of sports. The University is expanding its corporate partnerships to create more professional pipelines for students and have already started securing scholarship funding for the gymnastics program. Fisk also joins other institutions like Grambling, who have begun hosting conferences in partnership with organizations like Brown Girls do Gymnastics.
