Actress and LGBTQ trailblazer Laverne Cox is no stranger to firsts. She is the first openly African American transgender person to land the cover of Time magazine, be nominated for a Primetime Emmy, have a wax statue in Madame Tussauds, produce and star in her own show, and the list goes on and on and on. And now, she has accomplished another milestone, the first Black trans woman on the cover of Vogue

The September issue of British Vogue will feature Cox and 14 other pioneering women on the cover, labeled the “Forces for Change.” The group includes Sudanese model and advocate Adut Akech, boxer Ramla Ali, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, and actor Yara Shahidi. These women were all hand chosen by Vogue’s September guest editor, Her Royal Highness (HRH), the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

When asked how she felt being chosen by the Duchess, Cox responded,I did not find that out until last week. Edward Enninful (Vogue’s editor-in-chief) called me at 9:30 in the morning and he’s like, ‘I have someone on the phone for you,’ and it was the Duchess of Sussex.” Markle was originally asked to be on the cover solo but wanted to do something more meaningful and even more impactful, birthing her debut as guest editor. The September issue is the culmination of that work and features the “Forces for Change,” along with bits about internal beauty, Commonwealth designers, sustainable brands and a conversation with former First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Cox said that she has been a fan of the Duchess since her former show, Suits, and said that being on the cover of Vogue was “a dream come true.” She shared the announcement in an Instagram post saying, “I am completely overwhelmed and overjoyed to share this cover. Being on the cover of Vogue magazine has been a dream of mine since I was a child. To get to share this cover with a group of women who inspire me, who are truly forces of change is deeply humbling.”

A round of applause for Laverne Cox who continues to pave the way! The September issue of British Vogue, co-edited by HRH The Duchess of Sussex, is available everywhere August 2nd.
