Last year, Cherry announced a new series based on the characters from his Oscar-winning animated short “Hair Love.” The 12 episode series, “Young Love,” was greenlit by HBO Max and will explore parents Stephen and Angela’s lives with their daughter Zuri and her pet cat, Rocky. Now the famed director has revealed first look photos during an appearance on ABC’s “Soul of a Nation.”

“Hair Love” went viral, gaining more than 64 million views on YouTube. The short focused on a Black father learning how to do his daughter’s hair for the first time. At the end of the short, we realize the mother, voiced by Issa Rae, is battling cancer. The new series picks up where the last went off, with the mother’s hair growing back after her fight. While Cherry is still reluctant to share details, he does share that the new series will be set in Chicago and touch on several social issues.

“We can’t say too too much yet because we’re still in the middle of it. It’s an extension of our short film. We’re going to really get a chance to live with these characters. There’s a lot of information that was put into it when it was a short film, but there wasn’t any dialogue. But it really talks about a young Black millennial family with a young daughter in Chicago and just really talks about their life. It’s going to be a really fun show that’s going to touch on different social issues that I think a lot of young people are dealing with today. It’s really exciting. And I can’t wait for you guys to see more of it,” Cherry said.

Cherry will serve as showrunner alongside animation veteran Carl Jones (The Boondocks, Black Dynamite). Monica A. Young of Blue Key Entertainment will serve as executive producer with David Steward II and Carl Reed of Lion Forge Animation. Insecure’s Dayna Lynn North will serve as writer/executive producer.
