They’re keeping his legacy alive!
Oprah Winfrey is executive producing a new Sidney Poitier documentary at Apple, Variety reports.
Recently, legendary actor Sidney Poitier passed away at the age of 94. A pioneer and the first Black man to win an Oscar for his work, Poitier was a beloved Hollywood star and paved the way for generations to come.
Now, it has been announced that a new documentary about the trailblazing actor is coming to Apple and will be executive produced by Winfrey. For more than a year, Winfrey has been in production on the documentary in partnership with Apple Original Films with Poitier’s family also working on the project.
The new documentary is a product of Harpo Productions and Network Entertainment. NAACP Image Awards executive producer, Reggie Hudlin, is director the film. Hudlin is a veteran in the business, working on classic 90’s movies like “House Party,” and “Boomerang,” and directing even more recent documentaries like the 2019 film “The Black Godfather,” which tells the story of music producer Clarence Avant.
In addition to Poitier’s documentary, Hudson is also directing a number of other projects for Apple TV Plus including a doc about the history of Black leading men in Hollywood and one about Black leading women that Shola Lynch is set to direct.
Poitier’s family issued a statement about the upcoming posthumous documentary and the importance of preserving his impeccable legacy.
“To us Sidney Poitier was not only a brilliant actor, activist and a man of incredible grace and moral fortitude, he was also a devoted and loving husband, a supportive and adoring father and a man who always put family first. Although he is no longer here with us in this realm, his beautiful soul will continue to guide and inspire us. He will live on in us, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren – in every belly laugh, every curious inquiry, every act of compassion and kindness. His legacy will live on in the world, continuing to inspire not only with his incredible body of work, but even more so with his humanity,” they said via statement.
