When Njabulo Ntombela lost his father, mother, and grandmother at a young age, his great-grandmother, Nomkikilizo Ntombela, stepped up to the plate to take care of him and his siblings- something he would never forget, especially on his graduation day.

During his graduation ceremony at South Africa’s University of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, the 27-year-old took off his graduation gown and put it on his 89-year-old great-grandmother, who was elated to walk beside her great-grandson as he received his Bachelor of Laws. They both ended up kneeling down to be capped.

“I think she was shocked and surprised. She didn’t know what was happening. In my mind, she just knew it was a celebration and she must be happy,” Njabulo explained.

Njabulo wore a Zulu traditional dress, while his great-grandmother wore a blue shweshwe dress with a matching headdress. Like his great-grandmother, Njabulo is from Nkandla, which, as News24 reports Njabulo saying, is “famous for different reasons but we still have to hustle and find ways to progress in life. Most of us are struggling and come from poor backgrounds.”

However, with his great-grandmother’s support, Njabulo went on to reach an academic milestone.

“Whenever I achieve something in life, I know she deserves all the glory,” Njabulo told News24.
