We’re still basking in all the Black excellence that was present at the 49th annual NAACP Image Awards. Held on what would of been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 89th birthday, the Image Awards “celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors.”
Last night, host Anthony Anderson, the presenters and award recipients did just that. From Kerry Washington, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lena Waithe, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Angela Robinson, and Laverne Cox opening the show with a tribute to the Time’s Up movement, an initiative created to stop sexual harassment and gender discrimination.

From Daniel Kaluuya snagging his first Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in Jordan Peele’s “Get Out.” Peel won Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing for the film.

To visionary filmmaker Ava DuVernay winning Entertainer of the Year. DuVernay accepted the award with one of the most inspiring speeches of the evening.
“There’s a lot of darkness in this world and tonight I feel the warmth… I’ve got to honor Shonda with Scandal and Grey’s and How To Get Away With Murder. Kenya Barris has black-ish and grown-ish, said DuVernay. Micha Green gave us Underground. Gina Prince Bythewood who gave us Shots Fired. George Wolf gave us [The Immortal Life of] Henrietta Lacks. Donald Glover with Atlanta. Courtney Kemp with Power. Lee Daniels with Empire and Star. Justin Timian with Dear White People. Janine Sherman Barrois with Claws. Lena Waithe with The Chi and that’s just TV…. Get Out. Stella Meghie with Everything, Everything. Malcolm Lee with Girls Trip.”
She ended her speech by saying: “This is our time. We can say we were here when all this gorgeous art was happening, and that we supported it — that we lifted each other up, that we did as Dr. King said we would do : Live the dream. We’re the dream.”
