On Tuesday night, Ayanna Pressley, the first Black woman to serve on Boston’s City Council, defeated 10-term incumbent congressman Mike Capuano in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’ 7th congressional district. With no republican opponent to face in November’s midterm election, Pressley is now set to make history again – this time as the first Black woman to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“This is a fight for the soul of our party and the future of our democracy,” Pressley told reporters. “This is a disruptive candidacy, a grassroots coalition. It is broad and diverse and deep. People of every walk of life.”

Pressley’s policy platform includes advocating for stricter gun laws, Medicare-for-all, and the defunding of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. After her victory, she told her supporters: “Change is coming and the future belongs to all of us.”
