In April of 2018, Dr. Albert Chester, II and a crowd of over 100 people celebrated the grand opening of New Town Pharmacy. Opening the pharmacy, which is the only pharmacy within a 3-mile radius for area community members, was a dream come true that Dr. Chester and his family saved for two years to fund.

As a native of Jacksonville, Florida and a graduate of Florida A&M University, Dr. Chester witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by the elderly and those who simply did not have access to their own transportation to access quality medicines. His vision for New Town Pharmacy was to create a patient-centered facility where services would be aligned with the needs of community members. The goal was to not only serve as a pharmacy but as a main resource to the community for all healthcare needs. The new pharmacy home also happens to be in the same neighborhood where Dr. Chester’s grandfather grew up.

“It means I’m invested in sowing a seed into the community. Hopefully, it will grow and inspire other people to do the same thing,” Chester said. “Our whole point is to help and capture as many people as we can.”

Newtown Pharmacy is a full-service facility offering all prescription, over-the-counter, and immunization needs. In addition, the pharmacy will also treat those with or without insurance and those who reside in group homes and assisted living facilities. They provide free medicine delivery services, free medication information sessions, and a free prescription club where patients can access medicines for as little as $4.

One visit to the new website for the pharmacy showcases how much a “labor of love” opening this pharmacy was for Chester and his family. The site provides typical service and insurance information rounded out by its educational “vitamin of the month” feature and little known history facts spotlighting contributions of Black Americans to the healthcare industry.

Congratulations, Dr. Chester and family! We salute you for your commitment to improving your hometown community.
