Solange Knowles is being celebrated by The Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations for her breakout year as a solo artist. Selected by students and staff, she will receive the award at Harvard’s annual Cultural Rhythms festival on March 3. The foundation is honoring her for creating a “public platform to advocate for justice and fair representation, promoting constructive and empowering political messages.”
The Grammy award-winning recording artist, songwriter, and visual artist released her critically-acclaimed “A Seat at the Table” in 2016, a work reflecting upon self-love, community and race relations. She was recognized with Best R&B Performance for “Cranes in the Sky” by the Recording Academy in 2017. She followed up the album’s release with an innovative tour of artistic performances at places like the Guggenheim and the Chinati foundation. She has since been recognized for her creative contributions to culture by “Billboard” with the Impact Award and as one of Glamour’s Women of the Year in 2017.
According to the university, The Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations aims to “improve relations among racial and ethnic groups within the University and to enhance the quality of our common life.” Past honorees include Queen Latifah, Viola Davis and John Legend.
