Back in 2012, a YouTube video of Jada Pinkett Smith sitting down for a conversation with her daughter, Willow Smith and mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris became an instant "must see." The riveting conversation between the three generations tackled issues around womanhood, motherhood, love, and personal wellness. Viewers seemed to be instantly drawn to the levels of vulnerability and relatable sentiments that were shared between the women. It was a conversation that, while extremely relevant to many women’s experiences, was not traditionally had by three generations of Black women in front of a camera.
Fast forward to 2018 where this short film of a family conversation has morphed into a series of "Red Table Talks," multiple exchanges between this intergenerational family to address timely societal issues and current news. Jada will serve as one of the executive producers of the Facebook talk show and continue to co-host it with both her daughter Willow and mom Adrienne.
The show will allow each of them to share their personal opinions and perspectives around a variety of meaningful issues. Undoubtedly, the conversations that will ensue will demonstrate the same levels of honesty and thoughtfulness as their original exchange in 2012.
Pinkett Smith is no stranger to leveraging social media platforms to "weigh in" on hot button topics. Over the years, she has been very open about various occurrences during her childhood and young adulthood that have shaped her into the woman she is today. Most recently, she has also been very vocal with her thoughts around the lack of adequate numbers of roles and recognition from major award shows for actors of color in Hollywood. After being so outspoken around these topics, she was added to the list of jurors for the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, alongside fellow actress and Oscar winner, Octavia Spencer.
"Red Table Talks," is set to premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival that is currently underway until January 28th. We hope they are ready for three generations of articulate, multi-layered, and unbossed Black girl magic! Congratulations, ladies!
