Janelle Monáe is a woman, or should we say an “Electric Lady”, who wears many hats. She is a multi-Grammy nominated singer, an award-winning actress, activist, STEM advocate, CoverGirl spokesperson, and now, Dillard University’s 2017 commencement speaker. With her breakout roles in the Oscar winning film “Moonlight” and the Oscar nominated film “Hidden Figures”, Monáe has continued to use the power of her platform to defend and celebrate marginalized groups.

“Janelle Monáe’s significant accomplishments in music and particularly, film and STEM, both signature programs here at Dillard, along with her activism, made her the ideal person to deliver a timely message to our graduates,” said Dillard President Walter Kimbrough. “I believe this is her first commencement speech and we are very excited to see this day come.”
