On Wednesday, London Breed officially became San Francisco’s first Black woman mayor when she was sworn in by Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom on the steps of City Hall.
Breed, now a former President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, said during her final meeting with the board: “You can’t please everyone. Not everyone is going to like you, not everyone is going to do what you want them to do. And what I noticed about this board, and what made me so proud to be a part of it is, we stand our ground, we do what we think is best and we try to fight for the people we represent.”
In doing so, Breed reaffirmed her commitment to serving people from all socioeconomic backgrounds, saying to residents who live in public housing, “I hear you. I lived it. I will be your mayor too.”
From being raised by her grandmother in the city’s public housing to making history as the first Black woman mayor of San Francisco, Breed took to social media to reflect on her journey. She shared photos from her childhood, campaign trail, and swearing in ceremony along with this message:
“Growing up in the Western Addition neighborhood, it never seemed possible that I could one day serve as Mayor. I would not be here today without the community that believed in me. I will do everything I can to afford those opportunities to the next generation.”
