Meet Lynneice Washington. She's a Birmingham native, a retired presiding judge, a former assistant district attorney, a six-year breast cancer survivor, and now, the first African American woman to be elected as district attorney in Alabama. Washington, who won the election against incumbent Bill Veitch back in November, was sworn in last Tuesday as Jefferson County's Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney. Her new office is located in the same building where she worked for eight years as an assistant district attorney.
While Washington wasn't aware of the history she was about to make, she shared with local Birmingham news, WIAT: “I know the people, I know the community and I think it’s time, it’s time for change and I plan to be the one to implement that change, positive change. I want to include, I want to be rooted in the community.”
Congratulations, Ms. Washington! Thank you for paving the way and blazing a trail for young Black girls who hope to run for district attorney someday!
