Media powerhouse Oprah Winfrey is the Golden Globes’ 2018 recipient of its esteemed Cecil De Mille Award, an honor reserved for an individual who has made an impact on the entertainment industry. And who better than Auntie O? She will  become the first Black woman and the fourth Black actor to receive the honor since the Golden Globes first presented the award in 1952.

“As a global media leader, philanthropist, producer and actress, she has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world, making her one of the most respected and admired figures today,” Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Meher Tatna said in a statement.

“For generations, Oprah has celebrated strong female characters on and off screen, and has been a role model for women and young girls for decades. Holding titles such as Chairman, CEO and Founder, Oprah is one of the most influential women of our time, and this honor is well deserved especially in this 75th anniversary year of the Golden Globe Awards.”

Winfrey will join the ranks of past recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award such as the legendary Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington, who were the first, second and third African Americans to receive the honor. As a matter of fact, Morgan Freeman announced Winfrey as the 2018 honoree on a special airing on NBC; see it below:

The 75th Golden Globe Awards ceremony is set to be held at the Beverly Hilton on January 7, 2018.
