The Oscars Got It Right: 2017 Academy Awards Nominees

Last year when the Oscars nominees were announced the Academy's selection was noticeably missing something: diversity. So much so, that the President of the Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs made a statement that expressed concern of there not being one person of color nominated in 2016. Moving forward, she promised to “conduct a review of ...membership recruitment in order to bring about much-needed diversity in (the) 2016 class and beyond.” The nominees for the 89th Annual Academy Awards were announced this morning and it appears the Oscars got it right.

The films "Fences, "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight" received a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Academy's biggest nomination, Best Picture.

Denzel Washington was nominated for Best Actor and Mahershala Ali, Best Supporting Actor for their roles in "Fences" and "Moonlight". Ruth Negga snagged a nod for Best Actress for her lead role in, "Loving". Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Naomi Harris received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for their performances in "Fences", "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight".

Raoul Peck's "I Am Not Your Negro", Ava DuVernay's documentary "13th", and Ezra Edelman's "O.J.: Made in America" all got a nod in the category for Best Documentary Feature. Bradford Young received a nomination for Cinematography, making him the first African American to ever get a nomination in this category.
