Ruby Bridges

Icon for School Integration

1954 is the year that Ruby Bridges was born, and the year that Brown vs.  Board of Education ruled to end segregation in schools. To keep black students out of schools, students were given really hard tests that they had to pass to be on track to go to the school.

In 1960, Bridges was one of six black children in New Orleans to pass the test to go to the all-white William Frantz Elementary School. Ruby was the only one of the group that attended, as her mother felt it was best for her education and to pave a way for future Black children. The white community was so outraged, she had to be escorted to and from school by federal marshalls.
