Nelson Mandela

Apartheid Activist & First Black President of South Africa

Rolihlahla Mandela was born in 1918 in South Africa. He was the child of a man who was the principal counselor to the king. He heard many stories of elders who were fighting for freedom and hearing those stories inspired him to want to do the same thing.

He began his college experience at the University College of Fort Hare, however he got kicked out of school for joining a student protest. During that time, apartheid was happening and Blacks and Whites were not treated equally. In 1944 he joined the African National Congress and was engaged in resistance. The African National Congress was later banned and in 1967, Nelson Mandela was accused of going against the government and spent 27 years in prison.

That did not stop his work and dedication and when got out, he continued to fight to end apartheid. Years later won the Nobel Peace Prize and he became the First Black president of South Africa.
