She’s calling the shots!
A 26-year-old Texas entrepreneur is making history as the first Black woman to own a tequila brand, Black Enterprise reports.
Rikki Kelly owns “Ego Tequila,” a brand she started solely based on her love for the popular drink. Now at age 26, Kelly is the first Black woman tequila founder in the entire state of Texas and the third in the nation. The brand boasts a reasonable market price at less than $30 for a 750 ml size of Blanco and is 40% alcohol. The name of her brand was inspired by the alter ego you’re sure to get when drinking tequila.
“I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and create a brand that people could relate to. Since I enjoy tequila, I decided to bring a good one to market for other people to enjoy,” Kelly said.
At the age of 24, Kelly began her business, sourcing the tequila from the heart of Jalisco, Mexico. She created a product produced from 100% Blue Weber Agave and made with natural volcanic spring water, distilled in alembic stills.
“When I created Ego Tequila, my goals were to make sure it was smooth in quality, approachable for newcomers and tequila loyalists, and out of the ordinary. I believe I understood the assignment,” she said.
