Today, the 24-year-old beat Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4,) to advance to her first U.S. Open semifinal and second Grand Slam semifinal. The win also marks the first time that a U.S. woman, other than Venus and Serena Williams, has reached a U.S. Open semifinal since 2004.

“Oh man, I’m getting teary-eyed, said Stephens after her win. “This is just incredible. When I started my comeback at Wimbledon I couldn’t dream of this happening. Making the semifinals at my home slam is almost unbelievable, indescribably.”

This time last year, Stephens, who is currently ranked No. 83 on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, wasn’t playing in any tournaments, but now she’s vying for her first U.S. Open Grand Slam title.

“Playing tennis is an amazing thing and I’m lucky that I’m able to play a sport for a living. I really love playing tennis. I think it was just kind of eye opening,” Stephens explained. “When I wasn’t playing of course I loved my time off, but when I got back to playing tennis, it was, like, this is where I want to be. This is what I love doing.”

This goes to show that when you have passion, dedication, and determination that anything is possible.
