Former Ohio Congresswoman Marcia Fudge recently made history as the first Black woman to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 40 years. A veteran in the political arena, Fudge got her start in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office before becoming Mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio. Since 2008, she has served as representative of Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, serving on several committees including, the House Administration, Agriculture, former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Education and Labor committees.

This week, Fudge hosted her first press conference, walking casually into the White House press room, greeting attendees with a friendly “Good Afternoon.”

As she began to speak, she quickly realized her greeting was met with silence. She promptly closed her binder, put her finger to her ear to signify she hadn’t heard a response, and repeated “Good Afternoon” to the crowd of press attendees.

Some nervous laughter and a quick adjustment in energy lightened the room, with attendees promptly responding, “Good Afternoon.”

“Oh, thank you…I was wondering if I was in this room by myself,” Fudge responded.

It was a “classic Black auntie” moment that resonated with Black women everywhere. Twitter user @dilemmv tweeted footage from the moment captioned, “She got the press TOGETHER in less than 12 seconds! That’s Black auntie energy,” and the internet hasn’t been the same since.
