The numbers are in!
Universal’s comedy “Girls Trip” scored the biggest opening weekend for a live-action comedy of the year so far by earning an estimated $30.4 million at the domestic box office. Landing in the number two spot at the box office and surpassing its $20 million budget, the comedy centers around four best friends from college who reunite after five years to take a “Girls Trip” to the annual Essence Festival in New Orleans.
Under the helm of Malcolm D. Lee and Will Packer Productions, the film, starring Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish, takes audiences on a journey that shows the beauty, power, and magic of Black sisterhood. The film’s box office success also reaffirms that Black women can indeed open films. Case in point, “Hidden Figures”, which landed in the number one spot in its opening weekend and became the Academy’s highest-grossing 2017 Best Picture nominee.
While the two films couldn’t be any more different, Lee told Hollywood Reporter, “Black Girl Magic is real — people want a piece of it, they want to see it, they want to be empowered by it.”
The film’s script was written by Black-ish creator, Kenya Barris, along with Karen McCullah, Erica Rivinoja and Tracy Oliver.
