Howard University’s class of 2020 will now also include 16-year-old Brendell Allen, who eagerly accepted their admission offer as one of a few hand-selected transfer students to begin classes this fall.
“Howard was always my first choice! When I was accepted to Howard, I knew I was ready to go. I was screaming and crying, and I cannot wait to start class,” says Allen in an interview with the Howard Newsroom.
Howard’s recent efforts to closely partner with outstanding community colleges laid the foundation for Allen’s demonstrated academic excellence at East Mississippi Community College to become high on their radar to offer her transfer admission. The partnerships between Howard and various community colleges seek to ensure a smooth transfer process for students seeking to continue their education on the historic campus.
While Allen received multiple admission offers from other universities, she always identified Howard as her “dream school.” She will study biology and plans to pursue a career in the medical field after witnessing her father suffer a massive stroke a couple of years ago. As a result, she has a particular interest in cardiothoracic surgery. In addition, she will also be able to take advantage of the robust Transfer Student Support programs that Howard has put into place.
Dr. Melanie Carter, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education at Howard explains: “We have a Transfer Student Support program that includes a transfer orientation session, resources and materials specifically for them with dedicated staffing. We know many arrive and don’t feel immediately connected. We make sure that transfer students feel a part of the community since day one.”
