Together Hughes and Steinem co-founded feminist magazine “Ms.” and have spent the past five decades advocating for gender equality. In addition to this, Hughes also organized the first shelter for battered women in New York City and raised bail money for civil rights protesters.

Monáe will join actresses Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander in the upcoming biographical film. The release date of the film has not yet been announced.
