Meet The Black Woman Founder Whose Architecture Firm Is Overseeing $15B In Projects

December 23, 2022

She’s making sure the family name lives on!

This HBCU grad owns an architecture firm that oversees over $15 billion in projects nationwide, Black Enterprise reports.

Hailing from the illustrious Howard University, Deryl McKissack is President and CEO of McKissack & McKissack, an architecture and construction firm that she started in 1990 with only $1,000 and a dream. 32 years later, the business is undoubtedly a success! The firm has offices located in Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, and Washington, D.C. It’s also been ranked by Engineering News-Record as one of the top Construction Management For-Fee firms in the nation, and the Washington Business Journal considers it one of the top 25 design firms in the metropolitan Washington area.

The engineer and registered project management professional oversees and manages landmark projects. Her portfolio includes the Museum of African-American History and Culture, Navy Pier Centennial Projects, and the MGM National Harbor Casino.

McKissack & McKissack is more than a successful company, it’s also a part of history. She traced her origins back to the enslaved master builder Moses McKissack, who was brought to the U.S. from West Africa in 1790. She started the company as a continuation of the nation’s oldest minority-owned design and construction firm.

Outside of the business, McKissack sits on the board of Living Classrooms and the Executive Board of the ACE Mentor Program. She provides STEM opportunities to elementary and high school students in hopes to increase the number of Black professionals within the architectural, engineering, and construction fields.

We’re wishing McKissack & McKissack more success!
