Many Americans lack financial literacy. According to Annuity.org, 25% of Americans say they don’t have anyone they can ask for trusted financial guidance, 89% of adults report they don’t have an emergency savings, 41% of teens don’t know what a 401(k) is and 32% of teens don’t know the difference between a credit card and a debit card. Stephanie Soechtig, the director of popular obesity documentary “Fed Up,” partnered with Part2 Pictures and Atlas Films to help spread some financial knowledge with the new documentary, “Get Smart With Money.” This documentary introduces people from different social and economic backgrounds, focusing on their various relationships with money. With the help of four coaches — Tiffany Aliche “The Budgetnista”, Ross MacDonald “Ro$$ Mac”, Peter Adeny “Mr. Money Mustache”, and Paula Pant — participants and viewers will be able to improve their money mindset with new tricks and tips. Netflix describes the film as, “Financial advisers sharing their simple tips on spending less and saving more with people looking to take control of their funds and achieve their financial goals.”

Director Soechtig released a statement saying “Somehow we have ended up with an education system that teaches us the fundamentals of square dancing yet fails to teach us the fundamentals about how to manage our money. As a result, most of us are left bewildered when it comes to budgeting or investing – I know I was! While we are calling this a ‘money documentary’ it really is a happiness documentary. The personal finance concepts our coaches taught us – paying down debt, investing in your future, buying more time with your family – are the keys to a happier, more fulfilling life. I’m so excited to share all the practical tips that we learned on our journey of making this film. They have truly changed my life and I’m hopeful it will do the same for so many others!”

Two financial coaches from the show we want to highlight are The Budgetnista and Ro$$ Mac! Tiffany Aliche, also known as The Budgetnista, is certainly a finance hero! She’s helped children and adults become financially literate with her books and even helped with the passing of a New Jersey financial literacy law; now, she’s putting her hero cape back on with her feature in the new Netflix documentary. She shared her excitement in a recent Instagram post, encouraging viewers to take note of the lessons being taught. Aliche claims, “To build wealth for one’s families and future generations depends on financial education.”

Ross MacDonald, also known as Ro$$ Mac, is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business and the CEO and creator of Maconomics. Maconomics is a digital series on RevoltTV where he gives financial advice to people who may not have access to traditional avenues when it comes to receiving financial advice. Through this series, the Chicago native has developed partnerships with brands such as Bank of America, Target, State Farm, and many others. He was recently named McDonald’s 2022 Gamechanger. MacDonald is also super stoked to be a part of the documentary; he took to Instagram saying, “Mama, we on Netflix!”
