Abbott Elementary star and showrunner Quinta Brunson is going back to school, but not to study or teach.

The actress and producer is returning to her alma mater, Temple University, to deliver the commencement address at the 2024 graduation ceremony. She will also receive an honorary degree from the university. “We are thrilled to recognize Quinta Brunson for her remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to her craft,” Temple President, Richard M. Englert, said in an announcement from the university. “Quinta embodies the spirit of Temple’s commitment to creativity, innovation and social impact. Her talent, authenticity and trailblazing spirit inspire us all.”

“I am simply honored,” Brunson added.

Brunson is the first Black woman to receive three Emmy nominations and the second Black woman to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series category for her hit series, Abbott Elementary. The Philadelphia native got her start at Temple as a student in the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication. While enrolled, she joined Temple University Television’s (TUTV) first student-produced comedy variety show, Temple Smash, before leaving the university and heading to Southern California. Brunson would go on to have worldwide success due to her comedic storytelling, authenticity, and commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices.

Temple University will host two events ahead of the graduation ceremony that celebrate Brunson’s historic contributions to the entertainment industry. She will also receive the 2024 Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award, as a media luminary whose work inspires students.

Brunson will address the graduating class on May 8 during Temple University’s 137th Commencement ceremony.
