Janelle Monáe and Congresswoman Maxine Waters Partner To Giveaway 2,000 Meals During L.A. Food Drive

Singer Janelle Monáe partnered with U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters to help give 2,000 meals to families in need in Los Angeles, UPI reports.

Monáe’s WondaLunch food program teamed up with Congresswoman Waters, Nanette Diaz Barragan, actress Yara Shahidi and political commentator Angela Rye to help provide meals to families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The event took place this week at Ted Watkins Memorial Park in Los Angeles. Monáe and Waters, along with other volunteers, passed out food meal kits that included fresh fruit, vegetables and poultry. Thousands drove through to pick up meal kits while social distancing.

“I think all of us are taking financial hits, some of us more than others. My situation is not the same as a single mom trying to raise five kids, who just got laid off or that’s an essential worker. So yeah, I’m really thankful that people see the love in it and see the openness and understanding that the only way we’re going to survive this crisis, this pandemic, is by sticking together and leaning on each other,” the singer/actress said. 

This is the third of WondaLunch’s food drives. In April, Monáe helped distribute 5,000 meals to families in need in Atlanta, Georgia and in May, she held a food drive in Inglewood, California. Monáe thanked Waters for her help organizing the food drive, calling her a hero.
