Meet the two sisters who are using social media to share their love of medicine: Patricia and Stephanie Egwuatu.

Raised in Auburn, Washington, Patricia and Stephanie shared the same dream of becoming a doctor. For Patricia, who is currently a second year family medicine resident at the University of Washington, she became inspired to pursue a career in medicine after hearing her parents’ conversations about family members in Nigeria and Uganda passing away due to lack of healthcare access.

Why did you become a Doctor? I get asked this a lot and to be honest I became one for a variety of reasons. But the number one factor is that growing up and overhearing my parents conversations that another family member passed away in Nigeria or Uganda allowed me to realize that this wasn’t okay and it’s not normal and this is happening world wide. This is all due to the fact of lack of access to health care. This shaped me and molded me to have the desire to provide health care in third world countries and to open access to underserved communities . The fight is never over but my love for helping others keeps the drive and passion going. @whitecoatsblackdoctors @womeninmedicine @reseaudocteur @becauseofthem hair by @luckebykeishawigs

“This shaped and molded me to have the desire to provide health care in third world countries and to open access to undeserved communities here in Washington state,” Patricia explained.

For her sister Stephanie, currently a second year medical student at the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, it was her Pediatrician, who she went to go see at the age of 8 for her chronic migraines, that sparked her interest in medicine.

“He showed me how it feels to touch lives as he touched mine. Now I’m following my dreams of becoming a physician,” Stephanie wrote in an Instagram post.

Stephanie played D1 basketball in college, and although most thought she was only there for sports, she remained focused on her real goal: to get into medical school.

As a D1 athlete in college. I found it hard to balance both basketball and studying for my pre med classes. Professors and advisors even my coach didn’t take me seriously because they thought I was only in college for basketball. Little did they know that since I was 8 I had suffered from chronic migraines and it was my Pediatrician who listened to me and encouraged me and broke it down to me like an adult. He showed me how it feels to touch lives as he touched mine. Now I’m following my dreams of becoming a physician. This road has been tough very bumpy, maybe a few potholes but hey nothing in life is easy. @reseaudocteur @becauseofthem @whitecoatsblackdoctors @womeninmedicine #blackgirlmagic #naturalhair #blackgirlskillingit
