This young man is so deserving.

Satchel Smith, the hotel employee who manned a Texas Homewood Suites by himself during Tropical Storm Imelda, is being honored by the city, reports KFDM.

Smith was the sole employee at the Beaumont, Texas hotel when flooding caused by a tropical storm caused road closures, leaving Smith and the guests trapped and preventing other employees from getting there to help. The 21 year old stepped up to the plate and acted as front desk manager, chef, maintenance man and room service to some 90 guests. Smith went viral when one of the guests posted him on social media, praising him for his efforts during the 30+ hours they were all stuck inside the hotel.

Now, the city is honoring the college student for his efforts. Beaumont officials issued a proclamation to Smith, celebrating him for going beyond the call of duty, during a ceremony in his hometown. He was also surprised with a huge gift, a brand new Honda Hybrid. Smith’s car was totaled during the storm, the 2nd car he lost in 2 years due to inclement weather.

He spoke to KFDM about the honor saying, “I mean it was a bit unexpected. Overwhelming. I mean I’m truly thankful. I don’t expect anything for what I did. It was just doing my job.”

Congratulations are in order! Satchel is definitely employee of the year!
