Dee Mitchell is a basketball player at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He joined the team back three years ago as a walk-on and has been paying his way through school by working at a local Walmart in Stillwater, Oklahoma. On top of the 40 hours Mitchell works a week, Mitchell is also juggling his classes and basketball practice. This week, on the anniversary of his joining the team, head coach Mike Boynton decided to surprise Mitchell with a scholarship while he was at work, catching the entire moment on camera.

“I thought today was a good opportunity to let him know that he’s going to be on scholarship. Nobody has exemplified what I want our program to mean more than you have,” Boynton told Mitchell on the video.

The entire basketball team joined in on the moment via Zoom, congratulating and cheering on Mitchell as the surprise was revealed. Mitchell’s mom also joined in via telephone, congratulating her son as he teared up.

“I didn’t know what was going on; it’s real surprising, breathtaking. I thought I was in a movie or something,” said Mitchell.

Coach Boynton said that he deserved it because of his sacrifice, work ethic, positive temperament, and commitment to the game. Mitchell was visibly surprised and said he hopes one day to touch people the way his coach has touched him. His scholarship will cover the remainder of his time at the university.

Catch the heartwarming moment, posted to Twitter by OSU below.
