Instead of playing video games, watching youtube videos or studying for his next test, 12-year-old Monte Scott used his half-day off from school as an opportunity to fill potholes on the street his grandmother has lived the last 21 years. He told the Muskegon Times, its something he had been planning to do.

“I was thinking about doing it for months,” Monte said. “It was a perfect day. I got up, put on some shoes, filled up a garbage can with dirt, and put the dirt in the potholes.”

No one knew about Monte’s plans. His mother, Trinell Scott, told WZZM-TV that her son didn’t tell anyone. In fact, she wasn’t made aware until her niece texted her to let her know someone had shared a video of Monte on Facebook.

In the video, a woman can be heard saying, “he really got a garbage can filling these potholes…because his granny drives down this street and they down here.”

In recent months, the potholes have gotten worse and while people have acknowledged the issue, the city hasn’t done anything about it. For Monte, waiting was no longer an option.

He has filled 15 pot holes thus far. As for what’s next, he wants to become mayor one day to continue what he’s already started and help more people in his community.
