Wally “Famous” Amos

Cookie Entrepreneur

Wally Amos didn’t start off as an entrepreneur with his own company. Initially, he dropped out of high school. He joined the military, and eventually, he was able to get his diploma. Before he started his cookie company he worked in a New York department store, and in the mailroom of a company called William Morris Agency. He worked his way up and became the first Black talent agent in their history and helped to get a popular music group signed and worked with famous musicians such as Diana Ross & the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, and Simon & Garfunkel.

After a few years in the music industry, Wally moved to Los Angeles to start his own business. He started baking cookies and in 1975 he opened his first store. Because it was so popular in just a couple of months he was able to expand and open more stores. Famous Amos cookies became a staple of Hollywood.
