This might be one of the sweetest reading milestones we’ve seen.

At 11 years old, Nehemiah Turner has already found a pretty special way to spend his time: reading to shelter pets.

Action News Jax reports that Nehemiah became the first child in the Jacksonville Humane Society’s Pawsitive Reading program to log 100 volunteer hours reading to animals. Through the program, he kept showing up with a book in hand and some very patient listeners waiting for him.

The Jacksonville Humane Society says Pawsitive Reading gives children a chance to visit the shelter and read out loud to dogs and cats. The program is designed to support kids’ literacy skills in a safe, fun environment while also providing enrichment for shelter pets.

JHS notes that listening to someone read out loud can help lower stress levels in animals. For the pets, that means comfort, attention, and companionship. For young readers, it means a judgment-free place to practice their confidence one page at a time.

One hundred hours later, Nehemiah has made a difference for the animals and for every young reader watching him.

A sweet reminder that sometimes, making history starts with showing up, opening a book, and sharing a little kindness.

Congratulations, Nehemiah!
