Fact
Left home at 14 to pursue her Olympic dream

Gabrielle Douglas became the first Black woman to win the Olympic all-around gold medal in gymnastics at the 2012 London Games. She was also part of the gold-medal winning "Fierce Five" team, making her the first American gymnast to win both individual all-around and team gold at the same Olympics.

Douglas left her family in Virginia Beach at age 14 to train in Iowa with coach Liang Chow. The sacrifice paid off when she became the most decorated American gymnast at the London Games.

She faced racist attacks on social media throughout her career and handled them with remarkable grace. Her success opened doors for Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and a new generation of Black gymnasts who saw themselves reflected in her gold.

You just have to be yourself and go full speed ahead.
