Talk about full circle!

Dr. Shay Taylor-Allen’s path to medicine began in the halls of Yale New Haven Hospital, where she once worked as a janitor after high school. Now, years later, she is returning to the same hospital as a doctor.

Howard University reports that Taylor-Allen worked at Yale New Haven Hospital for 10 years, cleaning patient rooms, bathrooms, and even the office of the hospital’s CEO before pursuing medicine.

Her drive to become a physician was shaped by her own life and family experiences. While Taylor-Allen was studying at Southern Connecticut State University, her mother became ill with a vocal cord dysfunction that doctors initially dismissed as mental illness. Watching her mother navigate the healthcare system helped Taylor-Allen understand the power of advocacy and representation in medicine.

She went on to graduate from Southern Connecticut State University before earning her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine. Southern Connecticut State University notes that Taylor-Allen studied biology there while caring for her mother and navigating the challenges that pushed her toward medicine.

In March, Taylor-Allen matched into an anesthesiology residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. ABC News reports that she is expected to join Yale’s Department of Anesthesiology, bringing her journey back to the same hospital where she was born and where she once worked.

For Taylor-Allen, the moment is more than a match. It is proof of what can happen when purpose, persistence, and community support come together.

Congratulations, Dr. Taylor-Allen!
