Some full-circle moments feel almost too perfect to write.

For Jaleesa LaShay, the return of A Different World is one of them.

LaShay shared that her mother named her after Jaleesa Vinson, the Hillman College student played by Dawnn Lewis in the original series. According to LaShay, her mother heard Whitley Gilbert say “Jaleesa” on the show and decided that would be her daughter’s name.

Then, 39 years after A Different World first premiered, LaShay found herself helping introduce Hillman to a new generation.

“39 years ago today, A Different World premiered. My mom heard Whitley say ‘Jaleesa’ and decided that would be my name,” she wrote on Instagram. “Today, the sequel premieres and I had the opportunity to lead this campaign alongside an incredible team of Hillmanites.”

The original series aired from 1987 to 1993 and became known for bringing HBCU life and a wide range of Black college experiences to television. Several original cast members have returned for the sequel, including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell, Glynn Turman, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

That makes LaShay’s connection to the campaign even sweeter. The character who inspired her name, Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, is also back, with Dawnn Lewis reprising the role in the new series.

For LaShay, helping bring the campaign to life was deeply personal.

“I poured my heart into this one, and to see you all feel the love and intention behind it has made it all worth it,” she shared. “You couldn’t write this. Divine alignment.”

Her story is a reminder of just how far the impact of A Different World has traveled. A show her mother watched decades ago inspired her daughter’s name, and that daughter eventually got to help introduce the same world to a whole new audience.

Talk about coming full circle.
