Sometimes friendship really does turn into family.
When one mom realized her own mother wouldn’t be able to attend Grandparents’ Day at her son’s school, one of her best friends stepped in without hesitation.
The mom, who shares online as @bigashbigcash, posted a photo of her friend smiling alongside her son at school and explained the sweet story behind it.
“When grown women talk about not having friends, I be quiet,” she wrote. “My mom couldn’t make it for Grandparents’ Day so here’s a picture of one of my bestfriends at my son’s school this morning as his ‘grandfriend.’”

Instead of letting him go through the morning without someone there for him, her friend showed up and filled the role in her own way.
The moment is a small example of what chosen family can look like. Sometimes it is not about sharing the same last name. It is about having people in your life who are willing to show up for you and the people you love.
For this little boy, Grandparents’ Day came with a “grandfriend” who made sure he still had someone by his side.
