Right on the heels of Sahle-Work Zewde becoming Ethiopia’s first modern-era woman president, another Ethiopian woman has achieved yet another significant milestone by being sworn in as the first woman to head the country’s Supreme Court.
Meaza Ashenafi was sworn in last week by Ethiopia’s parliament after being unanimously approved. Ethiopian Chief of Staff Fitsum Arega shared on Twitter: “Abiy Ahmed nominated Meaza Ashenafi as the first woman Federal Supreme Court President. Ethiopia’s march towards gender parity in key leadership positions continues unabatedly. Congratulations!”

Ashenafi’s prior experience includes serving as a human rights lawyer and as a High Court judge. She advised the Ethiopia-based UN Economic Commission for Africa on gender and women’s rights and is also the founder of the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association.
