John Legend just made history as the first Black man to achieve EGOT status!
Legend, who’s earned 10 Grammy awards throughout his music career, received an Oscar for Best Original Score for Selma’s “Glory” along with Common in 2015. Two years later, in 2017, he won a Tony award as co-producer of August Wilson’s “Jitney,” which won an award for Best Play Revival.
Now he’s reached EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status at the 2018 Creative Arts Emmy Awards by winning an Emmy for producing NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” This makes Legend the first Black man to achieve EGOT status in competitive categories (Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones, and James Earl Jones earned it in non-competitive categories). He joins Whoopi Goldberg as the only two Black people to accomplish such a feat.

Winning the award along with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Legend is also nominated for outstanding actor in a limited series or movie. The winner of this category will be announced during the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 17.
