More life!
A Philadelphia man just celebrated his 104th birthday this past New Year’s Eve, Fox 29 reports.
Ernest Jones is a West Philadelphia native who just hit a huge milestone this past New Year’s Eve, turning 104-years-old. A graduate of Overbrook High School, Jones married his wife, Dorthea Burden, and the two produced eight children from their union, five boys and three girls. One of the Jones’ boys, Wali Jones, became a Philadelphia 76ers star.
Pop Jones, as he’s affectionately known, has lived a long and fulfilling life, crediting his 35-year career as a paperhanger with keeping him young. “Paper hanging, painting, you get miles and miles of work. You’re up and down the ladder. I had enough exercise to last me for a lifetime; that’s what helped me,” Jones said.
Franchella Simmons, Jones’ great-niece, said he is an amazing man and their family’s pillar. “He doesn’t miss a beat. He pays attention to everyone. He’s very detailed. He has such a sense of humor,” Simmons said.
Under normal circumstances, Jones would’ve celebrated surrounded by family and friends at the senior living apartment complex he resides in. But due to COVID, he kept this year’s festivities nice and small, with no shortage of love.
“Everything has really surprised me today. My phone started ringing at 9:30 last night. This morning it’s been ringing since 7 o’clock, people calling me,” said Jones.
Happy Birthday, Pop Jones!
