It’s produced by Jamie Foxx!

Over the summer, Billboard announced that Jamie Foxx was set to produce the first-ever authorized full-length documentary on the late, great Luther Vandross. Partnering with Trilogy Films, the Vandross estate, and their partner, Primary Wave, the new film is set to tell the story of one of music’s most revered yet private artists. At the time of the announcement, the new documentary had already begun production with director Dawn Porter (John Lewis: Good Trouble) at the helm.

“Like so many, I have always loved Luther’s music, but I had no idea of the breadth and scope of his artistry. I think people will be surprised at how much he accomplished in his tragically short life. It is a joy to be able to share his true story,” Porter told reporters at the time.

The film, Luther: Never Too Much, is set to premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, a major highlight for fans attending the 40th annual event. The eight-time Grammy award winner started his career as a backup singer for artists like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, and David Bowie. By the 1970s, Vandross had catapulted into stardom with his chart-topping album, Never Too Much, the title single becoming a No.1 hit on the Billboard R&B charts.

Over the course of his career, he continued to write and produce a string of hits before his tragic death in July 2005 at the age of 54 due to complications of a stroke he had suffered years prior. For the first time ever, fans of the icon will get access to never-before-seen footage that chronicles his rise to global stardom, his passion for the craft of music, and the personal struggles underlying it all.

“Luther is one of our GOATs [greatest of all time]. He’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. It is truly an honor to be a part of the team to help bring this incredible story to the masses,” said Foxx via statement.

The 40th annual Sundance Film Festival will take place January 18th – 28th in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. For more information on the festival and premiere information about the film or any of the other 90 selected titles premiering, visit the official Sundance Film Festival website
