Janet Jackson released her breakout album “Control” 33 years ago. Since then, she’s blazed her own trail as one of the most influential artists of our time and helped pave the way for generations of Black women artists. In honor of her timeless talent, check out this rare clip of Jackson rehearsing one of her top songs from the iconic album with choreographer Paula Abdul in 1986.

For the “What Have You Done For Me Lately” music video and the “Control” album, Jackson won a Soul Train Award for Best Music Video and Album of the Year respectively. According to Billboard, the album also received four Grammy nominations, 12 American Music Awards, plus hit  No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

In March, Jackson will join her brothers in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
