Talk about a power couple!

The Black Panther director partnered with entertainment company Legendary Pictures to lead the development of a live movie for the Image Comics series.

Bitter Root is set during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and focuses on a Black family of monster hunters trying to save New York City. A supernatural entity feeds off of the prejudice of the era and infects ordinary people, turning them into monsters. For generations, the Sangeryes have hunted and cured these monsters but now the family is at odds and they have to try to overcome their differences and save the city.

The series was created by author David F. Walker and illustrator Sanford Greene, along with Black Panther comic creator Chuck Brown. Image Comics is the publisher of the series and have released five issues as of yet. The first issue was so popular among comic fans that it had to be reprinted just a couple days after its release. The series has been nominated for several awards including the 2019 Eisner Award for Best New Series and a 2019 Ringo award for Best Series.

Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to the series in March and partnered with Coogler for the project. Zinzi Evans is a producer and has begun to team up with her husband on a number of films. Coogler is also bringing his Fruitvale Station and Space Jam 2 co-producer, Sev Ohanian on board for the series.
