Amirah O’Neal was a walk-on at LSU, her dad’s alma mater, averaging 17.2 points a game during the 2018/2019 season. In 2019, she was named the MaxPreps California All-State Girls Team honorable mention and became a two-time All-state honoree. Recently, O’Neal took to social media to announce her plans to leave LSU to play basketball for Texas Southern this fall.

The 19-year-old will join her younger brother Shaqir, who recently committed to TSU’s men’s basketball team. She will now sit under the tutelage of Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, TSU coach and Hall of Famer, whose mentorship might help O’Neal make it to the SWAC Championship.

The O’Neal siblings are making history, joining a wave of Black college athletes taking their talents to historically Black colleges and universities, including Master P’s son Hercy Miller, who recently committed to Tennessee State. Me’Arah O’Neal, the siblings’ younger sister, has also been fielding basketball offers from Division I colleges. Maybe a third O’Neal will be joining the TSU roster soon. We’ll see.

Congratulations, Amirah!!
