Back in September, Solange released a bold, beautiful and unapologetic work of art called “A Seat at the Table”. The album hit number one on the Billboard 200 chart and now its set to hit the classroom at Wake Forest University. Author and political commentator, Melissa Harris-Perry, who serves as the university’s Maya Angelou Presidential Chair Professor of Politics and International Affairs, is leading some of its students and scholars in creating a Solange inspired course syllabus.
Solange’s website, Saint Heron, said of the project: “Women between the ages of 16-30 are now being asked to share their stories using texts, music, and visual art that speak to their personal experiences. These submissions will contribute to a Solange inspired syllabus. Solange’s album uncovers many truths and speaks freely on issues that directly affect women of color and it is time for all of us to join in on the conversation.”
The course, titled “A Seat at the Table Syllabus: The Truths of Young Women of Color”, seeks to explore themes that deal with racism, gender and sexuality, self-care, and “a seat at the lunch table” (which focuses on race and gender as it pertains to elementary and middle school girls).
