Fan reboots are getting better and better these days. This uplifting and joyful melody featuring songs from the iconic musical, Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit, has gone viral on Youtube with more than 250,000 views and counting. Michael Korte thought of the idea and brought on Terence Thomas, a singer and member of Next Town Down, as lead vocalist, other new artists and even featured a cameo by Disney star Coco Jones.
“The film Sister Act 2 has been, since I was a kid, something I turn to when I needed a pick me up,” Korte, the producer, told Popsugar. “It has always been very loyal to me in lifting my spirits and bringing me joy.”
The project was started six months ago and brought together talented industry up-and-comers to bring it to life. Thomas, lead vocalist in “Oh Happy Day,” spoke to The Grio about how they managed to safely develop this showstopper while still creating an amazing viral video.
“We rehearsed outside and would meet in the park…it was pretty dope. Even in our dance rehearsals, we were all masked-up, which at times was difficult, but we managed to get through it and did it all following the safety guidelines.”
Whoopi Goldberg, who played Deloris Van Cartier in the original, sequel, and the upcoming third movie, highlighted the video on The View earlier this month.
“There are many things that are bringing me joy…this was really wonderful,'” she said. “These voices and these kids are extraordinary.”
Thomas told reporters the recognition was “a crazy moment” that took them by surprise. He said he feels like the video’s intention, to have fun and spread joy, is behind its success.
“You know, we don’t do this expecting the original cast members to reach out, but when it happens, there’s just so much honor in that,” he said. “I can remember during the rehearsals; it was all just so much fun. When you do something in the spirit of fun, I believe that translates on the screen.”
Sister Act 2 medley stars Coco Jones, Sharaya J, Brandon Montel, Megan Parker, Terence Thomas, MALAYA, Blimes, Darius Coleman, and Summer Greer. Bryson Camper arranged the music, and Amanda Ferrarese filmed the video.
