*cues the Girlfriends theme song*
Back in 2000, Girlfriends premiered on UPN and quickly became a cultural classic. Created by Mara Brock Akil, a powerhouse writer who also contributed to shows like Moesha, The Jamie Foxx Show, and later went on to create The Game, Being Mary Jane, and Forever, the series followed four Black women navigating friendship, love, and career moves in Los Angeles.
Akil was determined to showcase the brilliance, complexity, and ambition of Black women on screen in ways that weren’t often seen at the time. Over eight seasons, Girlfriends didn’t just make us laugh and cry, it became a staple in Black households and a forever classic.
Now, 25 years after the show’s legendary debut, the cast is back together again. Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, and Golden Brooks — better known as Joan, Toni, Lynn, and Maya — reunited not for a reboot (yet!), but for something just as joyful: a nostalgic new commercial for PATTERN Beauty, Tracee’s natural hair care brand.
Set in the ‘PATTERN Lounge,’ the commercial gives a sweet nod to the characters we fell in love with as Ross’ ‘curlfriends’. And let’s be clear — these ladies look like they haven’t aged a day.
“In this spot, we wanted to celebrate the styling rituals with our cast of various textures as well as reunite my Girlfriends to show the joy that lives in our shared hair moments,” Tracee shared in a statement. “From curls, coils and tight textures to locs, fades, straight styles and more — PATTERN has got you covered.”
