Merkerson, who delivered the keynote address, was embraced by the Talladega community and recognized with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for her contributions to the arts and public service. But it was her commitment to Talladega’s future that left a lasting impact.

“It’s important to give back,” Merkerson shared in an interview following the ceremony. “I have had a lot of luck in my career, and I came down here and met some wonderful people who embraced me immediately. I felt at home, and I love what this college has done over 150 years.”

Rica Lewis-Payton, chair of Talladega’s Board of Trustees, called Merkerson’s gift a transformative one. “It ensures that this institution remains a beacon of light in the community that fosters the development of future leaders for generations to come,” she said in a statement to CBS 42. “We are privileged to have generous friends and donors, such as Ms. Merkerson, who believe in the mission of our historic institution and who are willing to invest in its future.”

From her iconic role as Lt. Anita Van Buren on Law & Order to her current work on Chicago Med, Merkerson has built a career rooted in excellence, representation, and resilience. Her roles in theater and film, including powerful performances in Radio, have cemented her place as one of the most respected actors of her generation.

Now, she’s extending that legacy to Talladega’s students—many of whom are walking into their own futures with her encouragement echoing behind them. Now, thanks to moments like this, HBCUs continue to stand strong as pillars of excellence, possibility, and pride.
